Gai Kra Prow (Thai Holy Basil Chicken)

Gai Kra Prow (Thai Holy Basil Chicken) by Sarah Xiong

Eat with steamed rice and fried egg, unseasoned.


  • 1 lb chicken breast, minced by hand
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 1 large shallot
  • 2 thai red chilis
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 3 tbsp fish sauce
  • 2 tsp sweet black soy sauce
  • 1 large bunch thai basil, leaves only


Pound garlic, shallots and chilis into a paste.

Add oil and paste into a hot wok. Fry for a few minutes. Add chicken. Fry til fully cooked. Add fish sauce, black soy sauce and 1/4 cup water. Let simmer for a few minutes. Turn off heat and toss in basil.
