homemade kahlua

homemade kahlua by joanie

I'm visiting my sister...or, rather, watching her kids. I'm not used to watching a younger crowd so when I decided to make something, I also was convinced it had to be simple. I was also determined to use the leftover coffee in the pot. Would I make a dessert? Too complicated. BBQ sauce? Didn't have the ingredients on hand. Kahlua? Sure!

This recipe is not meant to perfectly mimic Kahlua. Let's face it, the stuff should be less sweet and made with better coffee.

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups of coffee
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup vodka
3 cups

Directions

Brew coffee or heat cold coffee. Add sugar and stir until dissolved. Let cool.

Add vanilla and vodka. Stir well.

Chill.

10 minutes

My critical husband Kevin thinks this stuff is too thin. I think the flavor is nice. I suppose it's possible to either use corn syrup or try to reduce it on the stove (hopefully avoiding sludge) if that's your thing.
