I like gin and tonics. They're refreshing, but they're also safe. Hard to mess them up. That's why they're often my go-to drink when I'm not at home. But if I'm at home--or at Irina's house--I do them a little different. I add bitters. Irina served it to me this way once, garnished with a Meyer lemon wheel, and I've never looked back. I do like me a lime occasionally, but the bitters are a must.
And now some trivia: this drink, which was popularized in the 19th Century, helped enable British imperialism, if I may make sweeping generalizations... Tonic water has quinine, which was used to treat malaria in places like India.
Ingredients
- 2 shots gin
- 5 shots tonic water
- 2 lemon wedges
- 4 dashes of Angostura bitters
- 8 ice cubes
- 2 lemon wheels
Directions
Place ice into 2 highball glasses.
Mix together gin, tonic water, juice from the lemon wedges, and bitters. Pour over the ice, filling 2 glasses.
Finish with a lemon wedge in each. Hand the drink to a friend, and say, "Cheers!"
