slow-cooked pork shoulder, asian-style

slow-cooked pork shoulder, asian-style by joanie

This is a tasty start to what I hope to develop into a fantastic recipe. Kevin thought there was a little too much five spice. I thought the spice was fine but something was missing that would put it over the top. Vinegar maybe?

This recipe will yield pork that is tender and brothy. You can add water and noodles to make a soup, or you can enjoy the sauce over rice.

Ingredients

  • 3 lb. boneless pork shoulder
  • 1 tsp five spice powder
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 2 cups stock
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 5 cloves garlic, smashed
  • 2 shallots, roughly chopped
  • 1 oz dried sliced shiitake mushrooms
4 servings

Directions

Rub the pork shoulder with five spice and salt. Add to the slow cooker along with the rest of the ingredients.

Cook on low for 10 hours.

Serve with green onions and cilantro.

10 hours
