cherry-basil sangria

cherry-basil sangria by joanie

The taste of basil in the cherry muddler drink made me want to try it in sangria. I love it! Basil and cherries makes the sangria richer than the traditional sweet fruit variety. Very sophisticated. Your friends will be most impressed.

The 7up is just brilliant. (A trick I learned from Ms. Tara!) It supplies both the sweetness and a little carbonation.

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle of red wine*
  • 2 dozen nice ripe cherries
  • 1 dozen basil leaves
  • 1 ripe grapefruit
  • 16 oz bottle 7up
  • * I use a nice rich wine, such as Planella, a Spanish red wine blend.
4 generous glasses

Directions

Pour red wine into a nice pitcher.

Muddle the cherries and basil. Add to wine and stir.

Slice grapefruit into small cubes. Add to wine and stir.

Add 7up and stir. You're ready to go!

Serve over ice and garnish in an interesting manner.
