bloody mary mix

bloody mary mix by joanie

It seems every Sunday Kevin has an affair. Her name is Mrs. T. Yes, she's married. To Mr. T...

It's that darn Mr. & Mrs. T Bloody Mary Mix! He loves it, even after having tried all the artisan mixes. Kevin is a Bloody Mary man, and Mr. & Mrs. T's is his tried & true, go-to Bloody Mary mix.

That's why it was so daring of me to intervene with an idea: let's make our own mix. He was skeptical at first, but as usual he got into it. We're still refining the blend, but it's pretty good so far. Just note that fresh tomatoes don't really make that (artificial) deep red color that characterizes the Bloody Mary. That's why this is her fairer cousin. Let's call her Bloody Mary Beth.

BTW, "bloody" looks funny when you type it as often as I just did.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb super ripe cherry tomatoes
  • 1 shallot
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 celery stalk
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 12 cubes of ice
  • 1/2 lemon
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 dashes tabasco
  • 1/4 tsp celery seed
2 glasses

Directions

Half the cherry tomatoes. Dice shallot, garlic, and celery. Combine with tomatoes in a pot. Bring to a boil over medium high heat. Add water, sugar, salt, and pepper, stirring until the tomatoes have softened (about 5 minutes). Simmer on low for 45 minutes.

Remove from heat. Add to blender. Add ice. Add the juice of half a lemon. Add Worcestershire sauce, tabasco, and celery seed. Blend until smooth.

Taste it. This is very important. Every tomato is different. You may need to thin with water or add more salt.

Strain with a sieve.

Pour into a pitcher with a cup of vodka. Taste again. Make it perfect!

Now you're ready for a party.

Yeah thanks for totally outing me. The T's (I always wonder if the Mrs. has a mohawk too?) have been a bit of a guilty, closeted pleasure until now, something that originally took hold on many airplane flights then eventually poured over into non-airpline life. This is especially embarrassing as my family has a long history of homemade tomato-juice-from-a-can bloody mary sunday mornings (I hope Darcy doesn't read this!)... This attempt at making the juice from scratch was a respectable start but I think we have much experimentation ahead before we get it right.
