Dutch Apple Pie

Dutch Apple Pie by car2ngrl

Everyone loves apple pie, especially when it's topped with a sugar crumble.

Actually, I like the fact that if I spend the time to make pie dough, I get two apple pies for the effort of one batch of dough. :o)

BTW, no eggs here so your veggie friends will be happy.

Ingredients

  • Pie Dough for a single crust pie

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 3 Tablespoons flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

  • 5-1/2 cups peeled cored sliced apples*
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice

  • TOPPING
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/3 cup butter, softened

  • * I used half Granny Smith and half Fuji but I'm all for using what you have on hand.
  • Also, as I cut and peel the apples I keep them in a bowl of lemon water to prevent browning, which I drain before I'm ready to use them.

Directions

Preheat oven to 375°.

Prepare the pie tin -- roll out the dough, place in pan, and finish the edges. Chill the crust as you prepare the other ingredients.

Mix the topping ingredients with a pastry blender or fork until you have a coarse crumble. Set aside.

In a separate bowl, mix the sugars, flour, and spices.

In another [large] bowl, sprinkle the apples with lemon juice. Then toss in the sugar mixture.

Arrange the fruit in the pie crust.

Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples.

Bake about an hour.

about 1-1/2 hours
